The scholarship awards were announced recently by Rick Tompkinson, President of the Belvedere Golf Club. This is the second group of students to receive the awards since members of the golf club established the Belvedere Golf Club Scholarship Fun through the Charlevoix County Community Foundation in 1995.
Golf club employees and children of employees are eligible for the scholarships, and candidates are selected on the basis of academic performance, community service, and leadership skills. The first scholarships were awarded to Chris Mikulski, Bob Sommerfeld, and Dan Pardee in 1997, and they will continue to receive assistance with educational costs until they complete their undergraduate degrees.
Keith Grunch, who will major in physical education at Aquinas College in the fall, was awarded a $5,800 scholarship; Todd Schaperkotter, entering Purdue University to study engineering, will receive a $4,600 scholarship; and Jeremy Rafacz, due to begin his pre-med studies at Western Michigan University, was given a $3,800 scholarship.
The Belvedere Golf Club Scholarship Fund is an open-ended fund, and those interested in making contributions may do so at any time. Gifts to the fund qualify for both a tax deduction and a Michigan income tax credit.
More that 90 funds are now managed by the Charlevoix County Community Foundation -- including 30 scholarship funds. The Foundation was established in 1992 by local citizens who wanted to build a reserve of charitable capital to serve this area's needs. To date, the Community Foundation's assets have grown to more than $6.5 million, and more than $1.4 million in grants and scholarships has been distributed to benefit people who live and work in Charlevoix County.
